At Nurture, we are big fans of music. It is a true love of ours, and is actually a massive part of the reason why we (Adam and Charlene) got together in the first place! Since then, it has been a shared passion, some of our best memories, and the very roots of our design studio. We are fortunate enough to work on a lot of different projects, including brand identity development, social campaigns, merchandise and digital rollouts among others. However, designing for music will always be a love of ours. For us, it’s not just about aesthetics, it’s about emotion, connection, and the kind of moments that stay with you. As true music fans, this never gets lost on us.
Music for mental health
We believe in the power of music to support mental health. It can calm anxiety, lift your mood, bring creativity, and create a sense of belonging and community. In the darker moments of life, music can often be a lifeline for some people. As well as that, music can often provide a sense of belonging and community for people. We have met some of our closest friends through music, and we know how important it is to feel that connection.
That’s why designing for music feels like a deeper responsibility. We’re not just creating visuals, we’re helping musicians package something that has true meaning. And that gives our work more purpose. We genuinely believe that music makes the world better. It brings people together. It starts conversations. It heals hearts. And when we design for music, we’re helping shape that positive force in the world.
Design to compliment music
When designing an album cover, a tour poster or artist merchandise, our goal is always to make something that reflects what the music is trying to say and resonates with the listener’s experience, in keeping with the vibe and personality of the musician. When we’re working on a project, you can guarantee we will be listening to that artist’s music as we are creating it. Taking that time to truly listen allows us to feel the intention behind it, soak up the vibes and feel what that music is trying to evoke.
Great design for music doesn’t shout over the sound. It listens, complements, and amplifies. We want every visual we create to feel like an extension of the music, like they have organically grown together. When the artwork and design perfectly compliments the music, it feels like the project is completed and the music becomes a living thing all of its own. As big music fans, we take massive pride and joy in being a part of this process.
Collaboration with the artist
Some artists come to us with a clear vision. Others come in with a vibe and a feeling. No matter where we start, collaboration is always key.
Working in music design can be a chaotic process. Tight deadlines, last minute changes and complete changes in direction are all part of this industry. But when we see fans wearing the merch, see the musician proudly posting their artwork, or see how the imagery completes and compliments the feel of the music, it gives us a really proud feeling.
The teenage versions of Adam and Charlene attending every gig and festival they could get tickets for, and bonding over albums, would be so proud of the relationships and connections we have built with some of our favourite musicians, and might even think we’re pretty cool for adults! They say if you enjoy what you do, you never work a day in your life, and we love what we do!
Music is a positive force
Music has a unique power to express and evoke emotions. It can help people process feelings, cope with stress, and find comfort. From the lows of grief to the ecstatic highs of joy, it can validate emotional experiences and even promote healing.
One of our favourite things about music is that it can transcend language barriers. A melody can move people regardless of their culture, background, or spoken language, making it one of the most unifying forces in the world.
Whether through singing together, dancing, or attending concerts, music brings people together. It strengthens community ties, fosters a sense of belonging, and creates shared memories. The fan bases that are built through music are communities of their own, and can be the most important part of someone’s identity.
Throughout history, music has played a key role in movements for change. From civil rights anthems to protest songs, it can inspire action and give voice to the voiceless. We certainly learnt a lot about the world through music and listening to lyrics, and we firmly believe that it helped shape who we are as people and what we believe in. That is why we love to design for music, because in a very real way it is a hugely positive force for good.
We could write forever about the joys that music brings and why we love to design for it. But it all boils down to this. Music enriches human life in ways that few other things can. Emotionally, socially, culturally, and even economically. It reminds us we're not alone, builds communities, affects our emotions, starts revolutions, creates memories, helps our mental health, creates connections, and for those that are lucky, finds us our partner and builds a design studio.
